AS-i networks: connecting sensors and actuators simply

A field-level network designed to reduce wiring and simplify connections to process equipment.

On an industrial line, every sensor and actuator needs to communicate with the control system. Point-to-point wiring can quickly become cumbersome.

AS-Interface (AS-i) connects field devices through a shared cable for communication and, depending on the architecture, power. Interface modules simplify connections and diagnostics.

I encountered this technology during an automation project at AJP, particularly for managing field devices.

Where can it be used?

  • Connecting position sensors and distributed I/O modules.
  • Controlling actuators and solenoid valves through suitable modules.
  • Conveyors and production lines in food processing, logistics and automotive manufacturing.
  • Integrating devices with a PLC through a suitable AS-i master or gateway.

Its main advantage is simplifying part of the wiring and making the installation easier to understand. Network selection still depends on device count, distance, safety requirements and the AS-i version used.
